ALMSHOUSES IN THE CITY OF LINCOLN FOR 175 YEARS

St Anne's Bedehouses, a range of 14 almshouses, was designed by AWN Pugin for Rev RW Sibthorpe in 1847 and built by G Myers between 1853 and 1854 together with the adjoining Chapel whose architect was another member of the Victorian Gothic Revival movement W Butterfield. The houses and the Chapel are Grade II listed buildings.

All the houses are terraced bungalows constructed in two blocks and linked by a covered cloister.

One house (No 9) has been converted into a Communal Centre which contains a lounge for social gatherings together with kitchen and laundry facilities. The secluded grounds include well established gardens, a small graveyard and a house for the resident Warden.

They are located in the uphill area of the city, 15 minutes walk from the Cathedral, the Castle and the Bailgate area.

The founder of the Bedehouses was an Anglican clergyman for whom prayer was an important element of this endowment, a wish reflected to this day in the criteria for admission of residents.
